CourseGraphic Benjamin West was an American-born painter who became one of the most influential figures in 18th century European art. Known as the “Father of American Painting,” he was the first American artist to achieve international fame. West made a career for himself back in London, but welcomed fellow American artists, many of whom he mentored, accepted into his studio, aided with finances and lodging, and guided into the wider world of European art styles. Today, American art historians consider him more “the teacher” than the artist, despite his many accomplishments with his own art.
