CourseGraphic John Singleton Copley was an American-born painter widely regarded as the supreme artist of colonial America before establishing a successful career in London. Born in Boston, he was largely self-taught, rising from humble beginnings to become the favored portraitist of New England’s merchant elite. His portraits of pre-revolutionary luminaries of the American political scene, including his famous portrait of Paul Revere, are treasured to this day. He invented his own early style, near to photo-realism, with incredible detail done with the skill of an accomplished artist, including turns using trompe-l’œil techniques.
